      Scary Good! March 24, 2008
Written by syncopatico
The beautifully bizarre nature of this piece takes on new significance with the contributions of only the four-man core Lizard band present on this fledgling Cirkus! Gordo’s maniacal mumblings provide some of this lovely dislocation, but Mr. Haskell’s (under-rated) superb full-toned bass playing benefits from this barer context. The drum takes for this record remain a force of nature as always! Mel’s appropriately spine-tingling soprano solo before the pause before the last verses also takes on new menace heard in this ’stripped down’ setting. And this even-more-elongated pause becomes effectively even creepier by emphasizing what is missing! And what of the composer? He gets to be heard here as one-man orchestra, displaying a younger and wilder exuberance of full-on mellotron before his modesty or producer’s ’mindset’ called upon further orchestral additions. What a joyful dread is heard! Perhaps this is a glimpse or maybe an extreme taste of what the core Lizard quartet might have sounded like live? (Bring on the early "Indoor Games" or maybe "Prince Rupert..." before or in-the-early-rehearsal stages with Jon Anderson!)

I always loved The League of Gentlemen, now I want to marry it. I waited for our date in San Francisco but it never came. Thirty years on this fantastic recording deepens the wound.
