Entry, First Avenue, Minneapolis June 20, 1984
Written by Mark Newstrom
The concert was preceded by various videos, one of which was Andy Summers and Robert Fripp performing (?) from "I Advance Masked." The ballerinas were lovely and lithe, I can't say anything about the guitarists.
The concert was pure joy, including three moments seared in my memory: Moment A)
Having just finished a number ("Elephant Talk" I believe), Adrian addressed the crowd: AB: So do you like the weird stuff? Aud: YEA, applause, etc. AB: Well I do too.. At this point, AB makes another strange guitar noise, but his reaction is total dismay; not the sound he expected. He then realizes he's been had, and looks over to see RF almost falling off his stool trying to contain himself.
AB: That's Fripp 3, Belew 2... (audience erupts laughing and clapping) Moment B) Robert absolutely shredding the guitar/violin solo section in "Lark's Tongues in Aspic, part II." Certainly seemed that "the Muse had descended." Moment C) no flashes, a receptive audience, Robert stays on with the band at the end. We all salute each other. . .

Maybe it’s the bongo drum sounds (samples?), or the Michael Karoli vibe in Adrian Belew’s guitar repetition, but I hear something resembling classic Can at work here...of course some of those more subversive early ’70s German bands were Thrakking long Read more

Really chock full of kinetic energy. I would have happily sat through a whole 90 minute set of just this type of faux "improv".

There’s more than enough energy in this concert to carry me through the uneven bits. Red is hot and heavy, Thela has good Belew guitar-twisting and some nice beats from PM, FraKctured is hot and sloppy, One Time is Read more

Another wonderful set of Frippertronics ! Thank you Mr. Mundy ! Loop III is an incredible piece of music and (in my humble opinion) the highlight of the set. Robert’s solo over top of the Test Loop does remind one of his Read more

This is dramedy at its best. Vroom itself is solid, and all the talk in between gives one the sense of anything but a relaxed run-through to get the mix right; it almost seems like a dispatch centre trying to Read more
