Written by Blackwater

I have been a great fan of both Fripp and Eno for over thirty years becoming hooked when I aquired a second hand copy of ’No Pussyfooting’ from a friend who thought it was ’crap’.  This friend also attended a London show by the duo and assured me, indeed the performance was ’crap’.  More recently another friend who attended the self same show confirmed with a snear of disgust ’Yes!  They were crap!  Pretentious crap at that!’

I have listened to this album only once so far; on a long drive in my car.  I can appreciate why some people might think music like this is ’crap’, but given the musical inclinations of said friends, I suspect it has more to do with a failure to like anything that does not fit into the strict parameters of what is ’normal’ to them.   (They also assure me that ALL modern music is ’crap’; a point of view I thought could only be associated with our parents generation.  Clearly some peoples musical brains cut out automatically when they reach a certain age)

This album is utterly stunning.  It gives a unique and long hidden insight into the evolution of ’Frippertronics’ and the later ’Soundscapes’ whilst remaining unique in itself.  The music ranges from the light and whispy alure of ’Wind On Water’ to some of the most demonic guitar playing ever commited to tape.  Fripp astounds me.  He has always been completely unlike any other player I have heard and this album captures his forthright experimentation perfectly.

’Crap?’  Well, these guys have influenced generations of musicians.  As for my friends assesment?  I just feel sorry for them.  What a dull musical world it would be without music like this to challenge and stimulate the brian cells.
