Darker but still Beautiful January 10, 2007
Written by LouieB
The first DGMLive release of 2007 is a surefire winner - Robert Fripp’s opening Soundscapes performance for the band Porcupine Tree in Osaka, Japan on November 28th of last year. Despite this download being only a half-hour long, this performance is amazing, arguably moreso than 2005’s ’December Suite’ series of concerts. After the standard opening "Bell Threshold" comes the dark forboding "Schizoid Fantasia". There is no resemblance to the King Crimson classic "21st Century Schizoid Man" heard here but the sounds that Fripp gets out of his gear here are astounding. Definitely a piece full of chilling suspense. Following the ambient "Bell Transistion" comes a stellar reading of "Time Stands Still" which once again is presented with new variations and themes. Listen to what Fripp does about 6 minutes into this track, it is truly amazing. This leads into the closing "Evensong" which is quite different from the full-length download that bears the same name. Instead of the lush ambient bell-like sounds that dominated the "Evensong" download, we are treated with a throwback to what eventually became Soundscapes - vintage "Frippertronics". The guitar phrases loop endlessly and slowly fade into silence. What a way to end a show. Once again, hats go off to DGMLive for an amazing first release of 2007. I’m looking forward to plenty more great Soundscapes in the days, weeks and months to come. Can hardly wait. A small footnote: How about releasing some vintage Frippertronic shows from 1979. THAT would be awesome.

Speaking in terms of emotion... to me the piece evokes a sense of successive revealments and discoveries... brighter but pensive melodic threads on an ominous backdrop of dark, bass colors and minor interval Read more
