The Savoy First House New York, NY |
Epic Road Trip June 2, 2012
Written by BlackPage
My girlfriend (and now wife of 30 years) and I road tripped from State College PA to Jersey hopping subways to get to NYC and back with a couple of my old PSU roommates. I had been wearing out Discipline, and got everybody on board to take a trip to the city.
This King Crimson show was transcendent. I clearly remember the nearly overwhelming excitement leading up to it with the release of the amazing Discipline LP. I was completely blown away by the entire set, the band was totally engaged and moving as one. They even had "new" material ("Manhattan" of course later Neurtotica) which instantly evoked the feeling of walking the streets of NYC and made me anxious to hear where else this band was going. Another hint at that direction was given with Sartori in Tangier. They of course broke out some older songs from the catalog (Red and Larks Tongues part 2), I never imagined hearing Red played live in my life, I remember the feeling when they started playing it.
I also recall catching the subway out heading back and coming to a full stop somewhere outside of Hoboken with all the lights out in the train for way too long. The whole night was a surreal experience forever etched into my soul. Thank you for making this show available. Nothing can replace the feeling I still retain of being there and experiencing this music, but this will sure be fun to hear again after all these many years.
Our ticket stubs for the evening are in the photo gallery for the show listing.

master(s) in the moment Mon., May 13, 2013

What really needs to be said: just listen to a master drummer in the moment--playing improvisatory and intuitively while at the same time reacting to Tony Levin’s bass (fretless?) underpinnings (who in turn, reacts to the percussive Read more

Of Stick And Slit Drum Tue., Mar 19, 2013

I’d recognize that 17/16 pattern anywhere!
Wonderful to hear *just* the "rhythm section" especially the modulation in the second half of the piece when Bill switches the percussion from the more genteel slit drum accents to the heavier boobams, rototoms Read more

I missed out on the CD release, so this FLAC version is most welcomed. Crimson’s ideas and sketches, particularly from this era, are so rich and musical that they make great listening even in unfinished Read more

Feel the Heat of the throbbing Jungle Mon., Oct 22, 2012
Posted by: syncopatico
Without guitars, the rhythm of this Heat glows and percolates: Tony’s bass guitar (throbs, grooves and emerges even more ’elastic’; while Bill’s (no ride/hi-hat cymbals allowed!!) tribal backbeat pulses more clearly with boo-bams, his crisp signature snare sound and a Read more
