Absent Lovers Now Present February 3, 2009
Written by barrystock
I’ve been waiting for an official release featuring the "Untitled Instrumental" aka "Absent Lovers" for 26 years. I first heard the tune on a bootleg purchased by a friend in 1983, "Indisciple Mining Rocks", and have wondered about it ever since. I went until late last year before hearing it again, and then found that "IMR" had been uploaded to a blog. I questioned a notable authority on the subject, and was told the tune’s brief history as he knew it.
What is most beguiling to me about the tune is the hovering, insectoid major second pattern, and it was what made me come back in my mind over the years to the piece. I think it is unprecedented in their canon, and is...really cool.
Thanks for putting this one up. It made my day!

master(s) in the moment Mon., May 13, 2013

What really needs to be said: just listen to a master drummer in the moment--playing improvisatory and intuitively while at the same time reacting to Tony Levin’s bass (fretless?) underpinnings (who in turn, reacts to the percussive Read more

Of Stick And Slit Drum Tue., Mar 19, 2013

I’d recognize that 17/16 pattern anywhere!
Wonderful to hear *just* the "rhythm section" especially the modulation in the second half of the piece when Bill switches the percussion from the more genteel slit drum accents to the heavier boobams, rototoms Read more

I missed out on the CD release, so this FLAC version is most welcomed. Crimson’s ideas and sketches, particularly from this era, are so rich and musical that they make great listening even in unfinished Read more

Feel the Heat of the throbbing Jungle Mon., Oct 22, 2012
Posted by: syncopatico
Without guitars, the rhythm of this Heat glows and percolates: Tony’s bass guitar (throbs, grooves and emerges even more ’elastic’; while Bill’s (no ride/hi-hat cymbals allowed!!) tribal backbeat pulses more clearly with boo-bams, his crisp signature snare sound and a Read more
