Thank you, DGM, for making these Frippertronics shows available, of which this is my favorite. While taken from a less than perfect source the artistry at work is breathtaking, perhaps the drama of the moment highlighted by the raw sounds including audience break-ins. The improvisation demonstrated is breathtaking including the use of empty space; The twirling, fading segue between the melodic "Improv 1" and "Improv 2" is a triumph of patience, the grinding electronica of "Improv 2" being one of the most frightening passages of music Fripp ever committed himself to. Then his second house solo over "Improv 3" is my favorite example of the Frippertronics model completed with a solo done over a playback of the loop built up during the first set. Just as punk rock as anything that went down onstage at CBGB in 1979.
All my adult life I wished I had gotten to witness one of these Frippertronics events in person (was 12 in 1979) even more than getting to see a King Crimson band play live, and this one will likely be as close as anyone can ever get through official channels. The other shows may be sonically richer in presentation but lack that "there in person" element. While all the Frippertronics shows offered by DGM are are 100% must-have material for any Fripp-o-phile, this is the one that I would recommend starting with to anyone interested in learning what Frippertronics on tour might have been like in person with an audience present. Thanks so much for sharing, and please keep them coming! ;]

I’m embarrassed to say that I just found this performance available on the DMG website. I immediately downloaded it. I was at this show and it was my first (of now many) live experiences with RF. Watching Robert perform with just his guitar and a tape machine in the back of a record store was amazing. I had always wished I could relive this show and what do you know, here it is. However, unless RF did two performances in Chicago during this time, I remember him playing at Rose Records, not the Sound Warehouse. Rose Records was on Ashland Avenue, just north of Belmont (I found a picture at: http://digital.chipublib.org/cdm4/item_viewer.php?CISOROOT=/rwk&CISOPTR=229&CISOBOX=1&REC=6). I remember buying a copy of “In the Wake of Poseidon” for Robert to sign after the show. I already owned ‘Exposure’ and being a poor (and cheap) college student (with a desire to get an autograph) I instead bought one of the only KC albums I didn’t own at the time. Regardless of the location, it’s great to hear this again.

As a music fan all I can say is that going to a record shop/warehouse and hearing one of my favourite performers playing live could have been the most welcome surprise. Unfortunately it never happened: all Frippertronics gigs took place so far from where I live (Venice, Italy) and the only complete live performance I could hear at the time was from a badly recorded bootleg ("Pleasures in Pieces", live at the Kitchen): I still have the copy in my cassette collection. So here’s my first chance to get a complete set of early analog pieces exactly as they were happening and in excellent audience quality. Refreshing & inspired, this music meant so much for the performer and for the listener as well... Early analog Frippertronics possess a strange hidden power and a human quality that can still touch you like no other instrumental. Don’t let that power fall!

I worked at the store, welcomed RF and went to go get him a coffee at the corner donut shop. I stayed for the show, and even got my picture in Billboard magazine from it (the photog shot the RHVL from the side and inadvertanly got me in the picture as well). RF couldn’t have been nicer. I have an Exposure poster signed, and it is the ceiling decoration in the stairwell to my studio/office. Later that night I attended the Wedding celebration for the tour manager of STYX. (entertainment: STYX and SURVIVOR)-talk about going from one end of the spectrum to the other!
Thanks be to DGM for releasing this--I thought this little slice of heaven was a fleeting moment to be relived in memories only. Bravo!

A great trip, going from unsettling strangeness to heavenly meditative music to exhilarating moments of absolute satanic darkness that lead to rapturous joy, no less... Perhaps the most unusual session of live music I’ve ever experienced. Robert and about thirty of us in the back of a record store.
The format alone was unique. Robert laid down some Frippertronics tracks, then took some questions and then did some shredding over the newly recorded improvs.
The ’small, mobile, intelligent unit’ was in fine form that night. Getting to actually chat with him was an amazing experience!
AND HE SIGNED MY COPY OF EXPOSURE!

Within the last year I emailed DGM and encouraged the release of 70’s Frippertronics. Naturally when this download became available it was my obligation to purchase it immediately, sound unheard. I was not disappointed. This collection, like so many of the Frippertronics pieces, is both interesting and moving. The linear loop construction allows the listener to listen as Robert makes his decisions and applies each new element to the ongoing loop. There is a playful aspect to this process even when the tone is serious. Then, over time, the loops degrade and smooth out into blissful soaring arches. These gorgeous arches have moved me since I first heard Let The Power Fall many years ago. Oh, if only when Fripp set out on these small, mobile, and intelligent tours in the late 70’s, he also had the capability to record straight to hard disk and hand the recordings over to "Stormy" Mundy. Alas, the recordings are rare and the quality compromised, but the sound here, has been much improved and is impressive, given the source. Thank you very much for making this download available and please consider making more available from the Frippertronics era. -Matt Harris

More than exellent show. Could have been great if mr. Fripp had recorded
his own shows all the way through 1978-79. I went to his Glypoteket show
in Copenhagen with the most wonderful suroundings and a concert I never
forget. It was taped too by one from the audience ( a very fine recording
it seems) Please release this soon.

This is an amazing historical and cultural opportunity for the younger generations to discover one of first attemps of bringing contemporary ambient/drone music to a wider (to a ceratin degree) audience (back in 1979). Don’t miss that opportunity!
We certainly expect some more concerts of the Frippertronics non-tour.

This release is my first exposure to a Frippertronics concert (previously I had only heard single tracks at a time). I was immediately moved during the first track and knew this would be a singular experience. As others have stated, the quality is surprisingly good, considering the source, and it does not detract from the listening enjoyment at all.
My personal favorite at this moment is "Improv I and Solo." RF’s playing is nothing short of inspired (anyone else love the clarity of his left hand trills?), and the emotional content is particularly effective. I do not think there is a weak spot in this entire release, and highly recommend it.

Twenty nine years after the first solo Frippertronics performance and 28 years after this show DGM has finally seen fit to release some live material from Robert’s solo tour of 1979 - and it’s about time. I too missed this tour when it happened and have been waiting for an official releases for the better part of 3 decades. The sound quality here is quite good. There is some audible tape hiss. This is no real surprise since it was sourced from a, most likely, hidden cassette recorder running at an unreliable 1 7/8 ips. For someone like me who grew up with lousy sounding vinyl boots this is NOT A PROBLEM. For younger ears more accustomed to the silence inherent in the digital medium, well, there is a bit of tape hiss here. Anyway, sound quality is not my primary concern, the performance is. The sound quality of the Q & A is distant (RF spoke unamplified) and since there is no music to fill up the spectrum the hiss seems even more prominent, but again, it is very listenable. The music is stellar, and makes up for any sonic deficiencies. This is a must have. BUY IT NOW ! That is the only way more of these shows will get released. There is NO ART WORK and NO LINER NOTES accompanying this release, a minor disappointment. Maybe once some is made up, we folk who purchased this early on will be offered the inserts for a CD. PLEASE RELEASE MORE OF THESE SOLO FRIPPERTRONICS SHOWS The one I’m really wanting to pay for is the Kitchen show from Feb. 5, 1978. I’m saving my 5 star rating for that release.

Frippertronics concerts are the only thing I never saw in real time, but that’s no problem, I am seeking my way through this Frippertronics webside. Always an adventure on itself! Nevertheless, the sound is remarkably good. Fine job DGM team!!
