The Vicar's December 1, 2005
Written by barrystock
Wife came into the room and asked pleasantly "who is this?" I said "The
Vicar from DGM." "Really? That voice sounds vaguely familiar."
Thatís what I think, too, but every time I get a pry bar into the mask, it slips out of my hands.
really good pieces here, the driving bass piano note of íThe Moony
Song" pushing along a voice thatís allied with the strains of R.E.M.ís
Michael Stipe, minus the Athenian accent, and a gorgeous arrangement
that grows and twists like a climbing vine, and thereís a sweet,
slippery something in here that wonít quite be pinned down (the mask
also permeates the music), like something youíve heard before thatís at
the edge of memory, that you are just always about to remember....
The Vicar is playing with your brain chemistry.
Manuel" has a some musically Liverpudlian genetic material engaged to a
vocal that manages to whisper "Nick Drake" without sounding like him at
all, and itís over too too soon.
