I find this to be one of Robert’s breakthroughs.  It has feeling elements putting the best of Soundscapes with a level of soloing that is heart felt but dark. It is also more open that a transition has been made.  It is truly a great work.

Glorious. I found this to be a whole new soundscape experience. The darkness, the rhythms, that amzing held note in the fantasia section - all I could do was sit and soak it up as if (mixing metaphors) I’d discovered a wonderful new dish in a familiar restaurant.

The first DGMLive release of 2007 is a surefire winner - Robert Fripp’s opening Soundscapes performance for the band Porcupine Tree in Osaka, Japan on November 28th of last year.

Despite this download being only a half-hour long, this performance is amazing, arguably moreso than 2005’s ’December Suite’ series of concerts.

After the standard opening "Bell Threshold" comes the dark forboding "Schizoid Fantasia". There is no resemblance to the King Crimson classic "21st Century Schizoid Man" heard here but the sounds that Fripp gets out of his gear here are astounding. Definitely a piece full of chilling suspense.

Following the ambient "Bell Transistion" comes a stellar reading of "Time Stands Still" which once again is presented with new variations and themes. Listen to what Fripp does about 6 minutes into this track, it is truly amazing. This leads into the closing "Evensong" which is quite different from the full-length download that bears the same name. Instead of the lush ambient bell-like sounds that dominated the "Evensong" download, we are treated with a throwback to what eventually became Soundscapes - vintage "Frippertronics". The guitar phrases loop endlessly and slowly fade into silence. What a way to end a show.

Once again, hats go off to DGMLive for an amazing first release of 2007. I’m looking forward to plenty more great Soundscapes in the days, weeks and months to come. Can hardly wait.

A small footnote: How about releasing some vintage Frippertronic shows from 1979. THAT would be awesome.

First of all, I wish everyone a happy 2007!

Very short after finishing this download, and listening to it, I was struck by-

a sort of digital lightning, as it were. There is a strange darkness in between-

the soundclusters, who are flying by, while gives me shivers all over!

There is definitely a difference here. Short but very powerful.

Speaking in terms of emotion... to me the piece evokes a sense of successive revealments and discoveries... brighter but pensive melodic threads on an ominous backdrop of dark, bass colors and minor interval movements. Beautiful.

I’m amazed how much territory is covered in this thirty minutes; from the soaring ambient belltones to the warmth of the Evensong. After one listening this has moved to my top two.
Again, the sound from the FLAC files is astonishing. Thanks to RF, DGM, and extra thanks to the Osaka audience for their active listening.

Hotel Acceptable With An Ace Breakfasting Trough, Nagoya.

A reflective breakfasting with a strong future-sense.

The in-house sonic provider plays chamber music of the historical variety, very welcome & acceptable, but this morning at double pianissimo. So I have been listening to the Beethoven & Bartok String Quartets via i-Pod & noise cancellators. This music is a need on this morning, a vital nourishment.

I sympathise with his predicament, and have offered practical advice based on many years experience of dealing with those in powerful positions, persons who look on little people as opportunities to test footwear.

21.25  Taxi ride to the venue, the Zepp Osaka, with Masa Matsuzaki of WHD. Masa has been representing DGM in Japan since the early 1990s. Few people understand promotion in this territory better than Masa. Masa also takes the opportunity to ask me questions no one else would dare ask me: the artist/business interface is a difficult one to negotiate. Masa finds no difficulty with this in our relationship: if he sees something as needed, he asks me to do things that have me shaking with fear & reaching for instruments of self-immolation. Fortunately, in Japan, these instruments are readily to hand.

But, in respect of those with whom Masa has less intimacy & familiarity, the Japanese code of courtesy, manners & professional respect apply. On occasions, I act as a reconciling & mediating agent. Masa Matsuzaki…

The musical passion of Masa’s life is English rock act of the early 1970s. The word progressive does seem to apply here. Porcupine Tree are now an WHD recording artist in Asia, an introduction which I effected. Masa has become a PT fan & even goes collecting CDs in paper sleeves with Steven. This is not as bad as pulling the wings from flies or tormenting small creatures, but is decidedly suspect in mature men.

This evening’s performance was made possible by the quality of the audience’s listening. Very generous & quiet. This enabled me to think and continue thinking, and use dynamics. For the second evening, Soundscapes began with Fantasia On The Theme Of Schizoid.

Regrettably, still too jet-lagged to stay for PT’s set.

Lobby call 10.00 tomorrow morning.
