Cynical Grooveshark
:: Posted by Sid Smith on Tue., Dec 6, 2011
DGMLive visitor NotSoGroovy highlights his two favourite moments of Grooveshark's breathtaking (and moneymaking) cynicism from the recently featured CNet article: How We Built A Music Service Without,Um, Paying For Music.

First up: “…we are achieving all this growth without paying a dime to any of the labels… My favorite story related to our case is the story of a kid who appears in front of the judge for sentencing for the crime of having murdered both his parents saying judge have mercy on me cuz I am an orphan.”

And this one: “In our case, we use the label’s songs till we get a 100 (million) uniques, by which time we can tell the labels who is listening to their music, where, and then turn around and charge them for the very data we got from them, ensuring that what we pay them in total for streaming is less than what they pay us for data mining. Let’s keep this quite for as long as we can.”

More 1981 Frippertronics Go Live
:: Posted by Sid Smith on Mon., Dec 5, 2011
Alex has restored three Frippertronics concerts from Fripp's benefit gigs for the University of Pennsylvania's radio station, WXPN FM. The three concerts are available as single downloads or as a bundle.

These three concerts are significant in that Fripp recalled them during a conversation with Joe Strummer (of The Clash) and journalist Vic Garbarini printed in Musician Magazine in June 1981.

Fripp: ...A funny thing happened in Philadelphia a few weeks ago during my Frippertronics tour. I was listening and I heard the next note I had to play. And I played it. Then I heard the next note, and I played that one. I'd been waiting 23 years for that to happen..

Strummer: That’s *real* music

Fripp:...and it was the first time it ever happened to me. And I started to cry while I was playing...

S: That's it. To know where one has to go...

F: ...and it's funny, but I had to trust it. I heard the next note, and I thought well, I'll try it. Then I heard the next one and thought well, this is shit, but I thought I should trust it. So I did. And it's a question of trusting the music to play itself.

You can download all three concerts  - one on Feb 20th and two shows Feb 21st 1981- here.

Some thoughts from Robert on these gigs are contained in his diary entry for February 17th 2003.

The concert, which is free (donations accepted) and starts at 8.00 p.m., is described as combining “the subtle force of Guitar Circle Circulations (each performer playing one note at a time and "passing" it to the next one) with the innovative and breathtaking pieces by 1605MUNRO, turning it all into a unique musical event”
