Jakko's Stiff Impression
:: Posted by Sid Smith on Fri., Nov 14, 2014
There's a new book charting the history of the now-legendary Stiff Records. Be Stiff: The Stiff Records Story by Richard Balls features interviews with many of the great and good signed to the label including Jakko, whose appearance in the book can be sampled here. Jakko wryly comments "Oh dear! Note to self. If you do agree to an interview for a forthcoming book, try to avoid drinking wine whilst waiting for said author to call"

Johnny Toobad Is Dead
:: Posted by Sid Smith on Fri., Nov 14, 2014
The death of Johnny Elichaoff (known to League of Gentlemen fans as Johnny Toobad) has been announced.

Elichaoff performed with Fripp, Barry Andrews and Sarah Lee during 1980.
After leaving LoG prior to recording their self-titled debut, he went into a career in the City, music management, and in recent times was featured as one of the dealers in episodes of Channel 4’s art collecting show, Four Rooms

Thanks to site visitor Holloway for letting us know about Johnny’s passing.

You can hear Johnny on driving form on any of the LoG recordings in the DGM Live archive. His drumming may have lacked the expansive flair of some of the other drummers in the Crimso continuum but his direct, to-the-point playing was pretty much perfect for the League. Here’s my personal favourite.

King Crimson played Guildford Civic Hall with their new line-up of David Cross, John Wetton, Bill Bruford, Jamie Muir and Robert Fripp. The third gig into the tour, the soundboard tape though incomplete, is blessed with stunning audio quality. First released as KCCC24 but no longer in print, other than as part of the LTIA box set, you can download this magical gig here.

Mel, Boz, Ian and Robert played the Eastown Theatre in Detroit. A "superb sound" was how Ian Wallace described the gig in his liner notes when the show was first released as KCCC18 in 2001. The full show is available to download here.

Belew & Zappa

Here's an interview with Adrian Belew discussing how pivotal his encounter with Zappa was for his career ahead of his show next week at the appropriately named Talking Stick resort in Scottsdale.

The Wisdom Of Noel Gallagher
:: Posted by Sid Smith on Thu., Nov 13, 2014
My thanks to Kev Mills for alerting me to this quote from ex-Oasis nabob, Noel Gallagher. "It infuriates me that people are more willing to sit in a coffee shop and spend a tenner on two coffees, talking about the weather with their friends, and that coffee will last 45 minutes, yet they will physically get angry at you for asking them to buy an album for a tenner that will last a lifetime and might tell you about yourself and might even change your life...It’s a strange moment we’re in where people are willing to spend money on shit." You can read the rest here

Atlanta was burning courtesy of King Crimson's visit to the Roxy Theatre on this date in 1995. If you were there you'll no doubt remember the occasion. For the rest of us, this soundboard from the evening provides a hint of what went on and is available for download.
