Travis On Tour
:: Posted by Sid Smith on Tue., Feb 9, 2010
Ahead of his dates in April with Robert Fripp in Spain, Theo Travis is reuniting with Jade Warrior bassist Dave Sturt to tour the UK as Cipher.
The duo will be adding a new score to the seminal silent film from 1920, The Cabinet of Doctor Caligari.

It says here...
This seminal horror film tells the story of the deranged Dr. Caligari and his faithful sleepwalking Cesare, and their connection to a string of murders. Critics worldwide have praised the film for its expressionist style, complete with wild, distorted set design. Caligari has been cited as an influence on film noir, one of the earliest horror films, and a model for directors for many decades.

Cipher complement the film with their unique style of jazz electronica incorporating live looping and computer processing techniques to produce a genuinely mysterious Gothic experience.

You can see an extract of the film with Cipher's music, and also hear the Today programme feature on this project here.

A Racing Uncertainty
:: Posted by Sid Smith on Mon., Feb 8, 2010
My thanks to Alan A of Brisbane, Australia who got in touch with this piece of vital information. "I noticed in the sports pages that King Crimson raced in the 7th at Townsville racetrack on Feb 4. KC was wearing No.1 and starting from barrier 15.I haven’t been able to find out how the horse went as yet, possibly equal first past the post but refused to be in the photo!" Well, it made me laugh on a Monday morning!

Jakko Giveaway
:: Posted by Sid Smith on Fri., Feb 5, 2010
Given his recent appearances in Robert's diary we thought it might be timely to run a fabbo DGM giveaway featuring Jakko Jakszyk. Those nice people at Panegyric have made available the reissue of Jakko's  album, The Bruised Romantic Glee Club.

Originally released in 2006 this is a double disc album which features contributions from Robert Fripp, Mel Collins, Gavin Harrison, Ian Wallace, Ian McDonald to name but a few Crims. And if that's not enough to tempt there's Canterbury legends, Dave Stewart, Hugh Hopper and Clive Brooks.

Spread across two discs (disc 1 being all original material whilst disc 2 provides some intriguing cover versions of King Crimson tracks and numbers by Henry Cow and Soft Machine), John Kelman at All About Jazz, wrote "The first disc focuses on Jakszyk's own writing—a series of largely autobiographical songs whose complexity and diverse instrumentation place them firmly in the progressive camp, but with a refreshing pop sensibility and utter lack of pretension. Jakszyk's voice conveys deeply felt emotions without resorting to extravagance or melodrama. The arrangements are detailed, but not at the expense of a melodism that reflects Jakszyk's longstanding interest and occasional participation in the Canterbury scene.

Jakszyk's guitar work on this disc is even more impressive than his playing with 21CSB, because here he reveals more of himself. There are elements of Fripp, Allan Holdsworth and even a touch of Phil Miller, but all subsumed in an approach that leans towards greater overall lyricism. He's a virtuosic player, capable of ranging from the powerful intensity of "Catley's Ashes" to the David Sylvian-like ambience of "When We Go Home."

The album is reissued in its original deluxe gatefold format with expansive sleeve notes on each track by Jakszyk (pronounced Jak-chik) himself.

To get your hands on this all you have to do is send an email to competitions@dgmlive.com with JAKKO in the title (lest ye be consigned to the spam bin of history). A lucky winner will be announced on Tuesday 9th February. You can read my take on the album over on the blog.
