In the basement of George and Peter Calatychos’ Fulham Palace Café on this date 37 years ago, King Crimson was born.

Ian McDonald’s diary had this to say at the time.

“Up at 1. Mike & Greg here until 2.  Practice Mellotron. Pete and Dick come to pick up Mike’s drums…Flute practice. Dick, Pete Bob & Greg came 7.30 took Mellotron to rehearsal room, & set everything up. Had a blow for half an hour until 10.15…”

At this point in the group’s life rehearsals included cover material such as Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds and Joni Mitchell’s Michael From The Mountains as well as original material from Mike (Tomorrow’s People), Robert (Drop In) and Greg (Lucky Man).

So raise a glass or cuppa and toast King Crimson’s many happy returns over the last 37 years!
