NightWorld
:: Posted by DanielK on January 17, 2013

Maybe there is something else going on here regarding the Bowie connection and Robert’s NightWorld dreams.

Highly coincidentally, just the day before Bowie’s public reemergence and the unveiling of his new single, Robert had a dream:

Rising from NightWorld and adventures with David Bowie;

Disregarding the way these NightWorld adventures have been misconstrued as "real", if music can fly by and take you into its confidence, is it not possible that it may have also visited Robert’s dreams in such a manner that these NightWorld adventures were more than just dreams, and instead something that David Bowie and Robert actually shared in a state of existence that transcends the waking world?

I would love to know what David Bowie dreamed that night.

The Revolving Piano & Other Antics

Albemuth wrote :  "I liked punk, and Keith Emerson’s revolving piano deserved ridicule".

Agreed....  BUT....  one thing is the music. Another is the image or the visuals attached to it. Punk is a style of music. The revolving piano isn’t.

The revolving piano or Wakeman’s glittering cloaks or Peter Gabriel’s masks may be VERY ridiculous...  And since we’re talking about the "theatrical aspects" and antics attached to a style, aren’t punk’s fake menacing looks, the frightening angry poses and the "rebel without a cause" attitude totally ridiculous?

In fact, it is business: an image to represent a style and sell a product.... like Roger Dean’s paintings represent what to expect from a Yes album.

Concerning EXPOSURE, words are not engough to describe the brilliance of that music. Sometimes soft, most of time agressive and fast, always beautiful and energetic. I think some songs are "punk" only in sound, because the complexity of the chord progressions can’t be found on regular punk records.  You Burn Me Up I’m A Cigarrette is the easier of the "punk" numbers. It sounds like a 50’s rock’n’roll tune, but distorted to the limit.

the bowie rumours
:: Posted by rja1967 on January 17, 2013

Robert is baffled as to how rumours started that he somehow ’leaked’ news of Bowie’s new album.

I think this came about because of a number of diary references to night time adventures with Bowie and sometimes Eno and Tony Visconti too.

Bowie fans, desperate for news on their hero, absent for many years, seized on a phrase such as "recording with David Bowie" to mean that Robert really was recording with David Bowie, unaware that a preceding phrase such as "Rising from Night World" actually meant that it was all a dream...

A more sober reading of Fripp’s diary would have made this crystal clear, but excited Bowie fans unfamiliar with Frippian idioms just latched onto the phrase "recording with DB" as being Absolute Proof that the great man was back in the studio. And with Fripp!! And Eno!!! WhooHoo!!

Ironically, it turns out that DB was indeed recording, and that Tony Visconti was under the impression that Robert had actually been approached. As today’s diary makes clear, this hadn’t actually happened. Visconti clearly read, or was told about, the Bowie fans’ excitable message boards and obviously assumed that the Diarising Guitarist had blown the Big Secret. When in fact he’d done nothing of the sort.

A number of people, including myself, have tried to set the record straight on various Bowie message boards but  the story - Fripp said that’s he’s recorded with Bowie!!! It’s all true!! - was far more fun, and such was the desire on the part of the Bowie fans that everyone wanted it to be true, so the story appears to have stuck. The real truth was simply too dull.

But it’s a shame that the story that ’Fripp leaked’ seems to be quite widespread, especially considering that absolutely none of the events of the story (the approach to play on the album, Fripp apparently turning DB down, and then leaking this on his ’blog’) ever actually happened.

Frippileaks!
:: Posted by emory0 on January 17, 2013

"To read today that Tony Visconti himself is now stating that Robert "leaked" this information online last year is strange"

There are lots of odd details not adding up. I’m not even sure Tony Visconti even stated this. If he was producer then he would most likely know that Fripp wasn’t asked (and I certainly believe Fripp who states he wasn’t asked). Even if he wasn’t around when Fripp would have been asked, no doubt he could just ask Bowie who would no doubt tell him.

Having read the original Blog entry, it never even occurred to me that Fripp was talking about something real. The fact that no one’s ever mentioned this in the press or anywhere on the Internets tells you just about no one thought that either. So it’s possible that a) No one leaked, b) No one tied to the new album believes that anyone leaked c) The press invented a leak controversy because they are desparate for an interesting story.

Then again, if Fripp did somehow osmote transpersonal information during his dreamstate then he indeed leaked, even if unknowingly!

Belated Condolences

Forgot to add at the end of my previous post, my condolences to Robert, Patricia, family and friends over the passing of Uncle Bill. He will inevitably always be missed, but never forgotten and we should feel thankful that he finally opened up about his wartime experiences in more recent years.

Bowie Dreams
:: Posted by emmapeelfanclub on January 17, 2013

Robert’s latest diary entry musing over him allegedly being asked to play on the new Bowie album is I believe largely down to his dreams which he writes about in his diary being misunderstood and taken totally out of context.

Last year in some music forum I’m no longer part of, there was much excitement when some lunatic quoted one of Robert’s dreams where he worked with Bowie and Eno in the studio as if it was fact. Various posters joined in, excitedly speculating seriously believing that what Robert described in his dream was really happening. Thankfully somebody did point out they were barking up the wrong tree and the topic grinded to a halt.

To read today that Tony Visconti himself is now stating that Robert "leaked" this information online last year is strange and my guess is that the speculation over the dreams spread to other forums and sites which Mr Visconti probably saw or was alerted to.

So, perhaps this is where this nonsensical speculation originated - by somebody failing to read Robert’s diary properly and indulging in wild fetishistic fantasies.

Bowie

I read today (http://www.classicrockmagazine.com/news/robert-frip-leaked-david-bowie-secret/) that ’Robert Fripp Leaked Bowie Album Secret’. It even provides a link to Mr F’s diary entry in which this heinous act was supposedly committed. I remember reading the entry. It was hardly a breach of confidence! I took it to be an account of his Night Adventures. Anyway, looks to me as if someone is trying to manufacture a story out of nothing, as is all too often the case.

Condolence?
:: Posted by emory0 on January 16, 2013

In case it of any condolence, from the little I knew of Alfie Fripp (from both the diaries and from UK news media when I lived in the UK), Bill ’Alfie’ Fripp was one of those rare men who appear on some level to choose the time and context of their moving on. Not many people are able to relinquish life on their own terms, but he was certainly one. Though that’s not much of a consolation, this is, arguably, a wondrous thing.

Here in these crazed United States, in the New Orleans area there’s a tradition of musicians marching with the coffin en route to the funeral, where sad and mournful music is played. On the way back, however, joyous music is played because the deceased are now "in heaven". Whether this is true or not I cannot say, but certainly this type of rejoicing is in honor of the kind of human spirit that lives and dies on his or her own terms. In this sense, "death is swallowed up by life".
