Errors and biases
:: Posted by albemuth on June 09, 2012
Carnamagos’s error is easy enough to make. I’ve been fooled by the web more than once. I agree that the "do I like Belew?" question is overdone. But I also think that the question is related to a deeper problem built-in to Krimson.
One of the main things that Belew brought to the table was a guitar style that complemented Fripp’s perfectly. As of 1982, all kinds of things became possible. And that band was exciting live, just as exciting as the Wetton-Bruford-Cross band (to me).
The "problem" is that Belew was given the job of writing KC’s ballads and lyrics generally. This was always the most difficult or perhaps weakest part of KC, from the very first album. It is a problem (or tension) that KC never really solved (or resolved). I always wanted them to shuck off the more song-based material. But this would have been dangerous for record sales. And maybe most of the band members liked the songs. For those of us who do not enjoy the songs as much, we might "blame" Belew somehow. But that is entirely unfair. He did a good job for what he was called on to do. I basically wanted a KC that sounded more like Meshuggah. Probably, there are many people who would have been unhappy with that!
