17.20 Bredonborough. Sensation in the muscles around the mouth, lips, gums & tongue has now returned after this morning’s visit to the dentist. Mucho work was done on the roots of my remaining teeth. The Good News: they were still in the gums which Great Nature has provided for my inhabitation on this unfortunate planet. The Bad News: this renders such work exceptionally painful without contemporary dental techniques. I support contemporary dental techniques. Mr. Thorne was the Wimborne who first put me in his chair, at age two-and-a-half, for fillings. Mr. Thorne refused to give pain relief, on the basis that he wanted to know if he was drilling a nerve. As an adult it occurred to me that, if he hadn’t known whether he were drilling my nerve, he shouldn’t have been my dentist. As a very young person, I failed to articulate this lack of confidence instinctively known by the suffering patient, but moved dentist instead. My dear Mother had all her teeth removed when she was forty, the top row one week & the bottom a week later. For extractions, Mr. Thorne gave injections. Unfortunately, the very last tooth pulled from her lower row had not been injected. I assume Mr. Thorne was able to discern this from my Mother’s response. Now, an e-flurry. 19.56 A walk around town with The Minx & an early evening is planned.
