Bredonborough.

A grey beginning day. Willyfred was not disturbed by this at all, leaping immediately into play-mode as I rose. My feet hit the floor, WillyFred’s were already in action, legs snapping like whipcords propelling him around me, continually, in circles.

On this day 26 years ago, my Father Arthur Henry flew from this world.

Cells invade classical space:: Posted by toycritic on April 13, 2011
I’ve long since become resigned to seeing glowing cellphones at rock and folk concerts. Tonight, at a performance of Beethoven’s Ninth at Symphony Space in NYC, I saw them for the first time at a classical concert, including the guy sitting next to me. He took it out three times during the choral movement alone. I cupped my hand over the side of my face to avoid seeing the bright screen. He couldn’t (or wouldn’t) take the hint.

But Mr. Cellphone Photographer had the right to behave in any way that he wanted! Even rudely and coarsely, without courtesy or manners! Even to spoil the performance for Mr. Toycritic! Because Mr. CP had handed over his hard-earned pay! He gave Mr. Beethoven his money! And the orchestra too! Besides, Mr. CP keeps classical music alive in NYC! That gives him the right!

Mr. Toycritic describes what is now part of contemporary performance practice. Until establishments-venue staff / representatives, performers and audients determine and find a consensus on what constitutes acceptable behaviour, the retreat from civility is likely to continue apace. Those who find current practice acceptable will continue. Others will tolerate it and complain. And a few will change the way they live their lives; I am one of these. Presently, there is loss. How to turn this seeming disadvantage to our advantage?

He couldn’t (or wouldn’t) take the hint. This is an interesting subject. The behaviour is a given: function. Could Mr. CP have behaved otherwise? If so, why did he not? The first concerns being; the second, will.

And another report from the front line of audients and performers…

Wilmington Delaware Gig Almost Never Happened!:: Posted by Chiba72 on April 12, 2011

Wilmington Delaware, Feb 11 1972, one of KC’s greatest gigs, except me and my drug crazed friends almost ruined it!  The 5 of us had been waiting for weeks for this gig, I lived right across the street from the armory and stood at the side door to hear the entire first show. We all had tickets for the 2nd show...always having heard that the 2nd show was the better. We stood right at the front door...first in line...ready for a great night. Suddenly, this little guy with glasses and beard wearing a green army jacket came from behind us and tried to weave his way to the front door. No way in hell was he going to be first in line!

We started shoving him around....pushing him from one person to the next, telling him to "get the hell out of here...we were here first."  He was trying to explain, but we just kept pushing him around. He was quite rattled. He was shouting "but I’m with the band, I’m with the band!"  We’re saying "sure jerk-off, tell us another one!" Just as things were getting REALLY rough, a giant arm reached out from the doorway and pulled the little guy in. We were all so pissed!  Who was this jerk anyway?

At last we get inside, the lights go down King Crimson takes the stage and there in the spotlight, guitar strapped over his shoulder is that little glasses wearing, bearded punk who tried to force his way past us...."Holy sh#t!!!  that was Robert Fripp!"

Despite the jostling....despite our being rude, drugged up jerks....they put on one of the most memorable concerts this 57 year fart has ever seen. Thank you Robert and from the bottom of my heart...I’m sorry!

This is what it is, and was. May we forgive ourselves as we forgive others.

There are some who find my comments on audients, in Kicking The Wasps’ Nest, somewhat over-strong and exaggerated, even impolite; although rude, drugged up jerks are not words I have used to describe audients. Mr. Chiba72’s account is only one example of one day in 42 years’ professional exposure to the public on a frequent, often daily, basis. As commented before, while preparing to go to university (late 1966 – early 1967) it was clear that the life of the working player would provide a richer liberal education for this/that young man than a conventional education. The life-lived-as-a-whole was more successful, as a means of educating, than the purely musical aspect of it; which was also rich, privileged, remarkable. So, what might the little guy with glasses and beard have learnt, that evening in Detroit? How might this have informed his choices? What repercussions might there have been?
