Today at the vicarage : BPI conference, Croydon
The annual general meeting of the British Phonographic Industry – the very staid British equivalent of the RIAA.
I sit through 'Greatest lunches of the industry' videos, discussions on food piracy, discussions on Napster downloads of free luncheon vouchers, even speeches from the chairman on his liking for free lunches, while awaiting my own free lunch appointment with Hillary Rosen, the main speaker of the day. But who is this? It looks suspiciously like Cary Sherman, a most competent senior executive vice president for the RIAA, but surely no substitute for Hillary? "Where is Hillary?" the cry goes up. What is her stance on the free downloading of luncheon vouchers? What changes in the law does she propose to ensure that chefs never receive a fair share of the profits? How will she ensure that we can still sell milkshakes to underage drinkers? And most of all, where is she now when we most need her?
And finally, what proportion of my record royalties were wasted producing the finely crafted, battleship grey, BPI umbrella that I received on my way out the door?
