Notes
"Something you've waited a long time for" says Belew just before launching into 21st Century Schizoid Man and arguably one of his best solos on the track; the long opening notes are a kind of echo of the original but suffused with Belew's own irrepressible personality.
When Fripp joins the fray he opts for an angular contrast, spiky runs and leaps. Eventually, the two guitarists lock together into a single sustained note that heralds the return to the intricacies of the final section.
A good gig but definitely one of two halves. It's not until Schizoid Man that the band really seem to hit the mark. The Sheltering Sky gives Trey Gunn a centre-stage moment where he plays a gorgeous sinuous solo, gently undulating, as though blown by the wind. Belew's chord work here is equally captivating, gently rising and falling without any drama, content to be adding the reflective reverie this track is capable of conjuring.
Flat-out rocking is the order of the day on Vrooom Vrooom and there's some metrical mayhem to be enjoyed during SSEDD. Elephant Talk is taken something of a gallop, whilst Fripp's solo after the second verse of Indiscipline sounds like its a fanfare for the horsemen of the apocalypse. They liked it!
