Notes
The seventh gig on this short Frippertronics jaunt finds the guitarist creating some eerie mood music. That sense of other-worldliness is further reinforced by the inclusion of the solos from bootleg sources which have been painstakingly matched up to the original reels by Alex ‘Stormy’ Mundy. The difference in the audio quality makes it sound as though the room was tuning into a radio station broadcasting from the past or perhaps another dimension altogether.

Fripp’s talk takes in monads, dyads, tetrads and a whole host of variations on a way of looking and understanding a particular theme, scheme or order of things. Alongside such insights we hear a little about his Auntie Vi and her 100 % success rate teaching music (due in part to Robert not being one of her pupils). Also worth getting your listening gear around are the moments where Fripp plays a couple of bars of Hendrix (as well as impersonating JG Bennett’s description of seeing Hendrix perform at the Isle of Wight festival in 1970), and there’s an on the spot demonstration of how Fripp achieves that famous ‘revved up’ sound on Sailors Tale and LTIA. Not long after that, On the last lot of loops and solos, Fripp really tears it up with an astonishingly gnarly and abrasive solo, sending the punters away sounding fairly happy.

Please note that a very short section of the lecture cuts out. However, Alex has patched the missing section from bootleg source in order to be able the present the full concert and lecture.

For the few people who may have attended this amazing show, I am sure this will bring back some very unique and happy memories.

For the many people who were not able to see this entirely unique performance / tour, this is a wonderful way to experience it: musically and lecturally.

I was lucky enough to be at this event, seated in the first row, and have a cassette recording of the show given to me shortly thereafter by someone who was attending Boston University at that time.

The lecture portion of the event is a most unique aspect of this evening, in that recordings of Frippertronics are available.

Those with longer memories may remember that a transcription of this exact lecture was once posted to Elephant Talk.

Reading a lecture transcript, however, isn’t as impactful as hearing the presentation.

Highly recommended!
