Taken from the Starless & Bible Black session reels,here's the very first take of The Night Watch. Of particular interest here is John Wetton's beautifully expressive bass work moving with Fripp's nimble picking. That mix of tough and tender components were part of the the team's arsenal and often key to making a track take flight.

A Testament to George Chkiantz, Thu., Mar 14, 2013

Whenever I hear recorded evidence of King Crimson in 1973/74 I’m reminded of the superb audio recording/engineering talent(s) of George Chkiantz! Each instrument can be heard clearly in the overall mix: the guitar occupying its proper space, a full bass sound that doesn’t (usually!) overwhelm, aligned with a well-defined drum sound with each piece of the kit heard with crystal clarity.
Mr. Chkiantz was the recording engineer on one of my favorite records of all time and my favorite Jimi Hendrix album (as well as being his best sounding album in terms of purely sound quality), The JHE’s Axis: Bold As Love. (Also an innovative recording with its initial use of stereo flanging.) Obviously, a skilled recording engineer to be able to work successfully and satisfy such discerning and aware musicians as Jimi, RF, BB, etc...
Let us not forget how well-recorded KC was live in concert in ’73/’74, and how people who originally heard Starless And Bible Black back in 1974 had no idea that it was mostly derived from live recording documentation. Live or as represented on these studio recordings, Mr. Chkiantz delivered the goods. All hail George Chkiantz!
