Notes
This concert was originally issued as KCCC 30 in 2004. Writing the liner notes, Ian Wallace, responding to some of the criticism’s made about Boz’s contributions at the time, had this observation to make. “This is obviously a band at its peak, enjoying one another’s playing and it shows. Mel, Robert, Ian are stretching out whilst Boz is anchoring the whole thing, steady and ultimately reliable, enabling the others to take it out as far as Pluto and back without ever getting lost. A musical lighthouse if you will saving the others from an impending train wreck...That was the thing about Boz that so many people didn’t get. Apart from being lyrical, his playing was solid and reliable. Something that is so necessary in playing this kind of music where anything can happen at any given time. I guess many of the listeners didn’t get that. But the players sure did.” You can hear Boz stretching out quite a bit himself during the improv section of The Letters, as well as a rare Mellotronic interjection from Fripp in the climatic moments of the track. Also of note is the live version of Islands. The sound quality of this bootleg is notably better than the boot from the previous evening which means we get a clearer ear-view of Fripp’s picking and embellishments on the track. Despite the lo-fi provenance this is a thing of joy.
