Notes
Only the second set from the last night at the Zoom remains in the archive with an abruptly truncated intro to Pictures. Sailors Tale – a track so new that Boz can’t even recall its title - is the star of the show although fans of Tippettesque Honher pianet workouts will also find themselves drawn to The Devil’s Triangle. A week after the residency had finished, long-standing supporter of the band, Richard Williams heard the tapes from the Zoom Club and observed in the Melody Maker that “The recordings show that the band has grown together in a remarkably short time, and is already developing its own personality” and that “it’s a very strong blowing band with particular emphasis on Collins’s extraordinarily confident alto and tenor.” Elsewhere in his preview he notes “Bob Fripp was almost bubbling over with joy, after having confessed to extreme nervousness after such a long time away from audiences.” Five months later the band were recording Islands.

Short but sweet, average sound quality. Boz’s newness to the bass forces him to keep it simple and he is truly rock steady! On "Sailor’s Tale" Wallace truly goes nuts with the time keeping. Boz doesn’t budge an inch. Musicians will enjoy what sounds like a musical game of "chicken". I used to work with a drummer like that-hello Ade! Top marks also to Mel Collins on "Cascade". Throughout these Zoom gigs you get a clear picture of the young Fripp’s astounding skills on the guitar. The long stretches of free improv in this band show him way ahead of the field. Has it been said before that this was a true jazz-rock band?
