The Slow Music boys get slower and even more cautious during the first set here on Bill Rieflin’s home turf of Seattle. The echo-laden percussives which dominate the second and third improvisations of the first set mark out a sombre procession as all kinds of disembodied electronics swoosh past in the atmospheric slipstream. The emergence of a descending “spy movie” theme towards the end gives a sense of resolution which Bill Rieflin didn’t necessarily feel was there at the time. Slow Music’s guitarist with a Dorset burr judged the opening set to be “tentative.”

“In our music, space is a tool to be used. It is wide open within a certain context. If someone is moved to go in a certain direction, then so be it" said Bill in an interview with the local press. Finding their feet in the second set, Pete Buck has also found a butter knife with which to elicit glissando effects against Fripp’s single-note searchbeams and the low rumble of sampled drum rolls. The build-up to the climax of the final improvisation of the evening is superb: a frenetic tangle of howling notes ascending arco bass and shimmering cymbals bring the second set to a devastating conclusion.

On balance, a more reserved performance than the previous evening but no less engaging.
The next gig in this short tour would see the ensemble delve even deeper into the collective Slow Music psyche.

Arriving at the Soundbox around 15.00 where, Bill tells me, Crimson played in 1981 – and Bill was there.

I remember the (modest) hotel, and the difficulty at breakfast in explaining to the server that I wanted hot milk with my coffee. Amazing shock horror! Seattle unaware of lattes, cappucini, café con leche & café au lait! And yet, it was so.

23.50  The Seattle Guitar Circle began at 20.30, in three locations around the FOH, in A# harmonic minor (an octotonic version, down a semitone). This tuned the air of the performance space by bringing a quality of intentionality to bear, and setting up the beginning of Slow Music at 21.00. Slow Music & the SGC cross-faded over perhaps 5 minutes.

Peter has acquired a new model of the pedal that brought about his equipment-meltdown yesterday, but added a wonderful new item of technology: a butter knife. This Peter used to great effect, arguably employed more effectively than the Solar Voyager 1.3. Unarguably, the butter knife used less electricity.

From this guitarist’s stool, the first set was tentative; the second, outgoing.

 These are the words i think of, listening to this new release from Slow Music.       

 During some pieces time is hardly moving forwards, and everything calms down, even your heartbeat. And this is just for the good. Especially nowadays, with stress almost in all situations of the daily life, and sudden cruelty on each streetcorner! A good performance, a new way to let the music flow in all directions at the same time!
