Notes
Robert’s last day before the 30,000 campers at Eastnor has a more expansive set of scapes. Large washes of colour bathe the listener during Big Chill I but it’s the darker undertows of the second main piece (imaginatively titled Big Chill II) that create the shivers thanks in part to fleeting smears of notes darting back and forth and longer, lower trumpet-like eruptions. Whether these tones and unexpected timbres were deliberate or as a result of what Robert calls “pilot error” is open to speculation. Either way they’re very welcome and are probably nearer to the kind of widescreen work performed in New York at the Society for Ethical Culture in June.
Performer at the event, DJ/Producer Chris Last remarked “I especially enjoyed listening to Robert Fripp, much more so that I even thought I would. His set was an avalanche of colour. Just when I thought it was starting to get the slightest bit too "new age ambient,"he would throw in some dissonant chords that were just perfect, adding some darker colours. It was really just fantastic.” He's not wrong. Of the two days available, this one sounds like the keeper to these ears but you'll make your own mind up about that.

World HQ.

A beautiful Sunday morning.

Big Chill By The Back Door…

… before leaving Bredonborough for The (other) Big Chill at 10.10. Today, we went the back way through Upton-On-Severn & West Malvern. Today's performance time: 13.15 – 14.00.

Looking out from the Artist Entrance…

Artist Transport to the Chill Tent…

Audient Accomodations…

Preparing the Third Launch…

One of the hazards of open-air performance in daytime is sunlight obscuring displays on the equipment. This is especially problematic when the performer has many displays & is unfamiliar with nearly all of them. Hence the cardboard boxes covered in black bin-liners: strategically placed in front of the synths & Rocktron, the shadows provide sufficient darkness to show the circuit/programme activated.

John the Hero…

The guitar-side of the Tokai packed up at line check, leaving just the digital pickup working (to trigger the synths). Not ideal, but workable.

The form of today's set allowed for longer structures, that the performance might unfold in its own time. If you can't do that at The Big Chill, you can't do it anywhere. No idea how it was. T was, once again, very supportive.

Then to a late lunch in a small teahouse, on a small lane leading up to Ledbury church, and a walk around town. On the way home, a walk around Upton-on-Severn, arriving back in Bredonborough at the end of the afternoon.

How very civilised: driving 20 miles to work through the English countryside, playing at lunchtime, eating with my Wife, then gentling home.

A glorious evening.

"fleeting smears of notes ..." an apt and evocative description from the webmaster.
Id have to agree that the second piece is a real stellar standout. Sublime and scintillating.
